elpa-flycheck software package provides modern on-the-fly syntax checking for Emacs, you can install in your Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) by running the commands given below on the terminal,
$ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install elpa-flycheck
elpa-flycheck is installed in your system.
Make ensure the elpa-flycheck package were installed using the commands given below,
$ sudo dpkg-query -l | grep elpa-flycheck *
You will get with elpa-flycheck package name, version, architecture and description in a table
